In January of 2007, John and Hank Green started a project known as Brotherhood 2.0. Over the course of their first year on YouTube, they gained a following of more than 50,000 viewers who they began referring to as nerdfighters.
Hank Green introduced the Project For Awesome, in a video he made in early December 2007. The project, which has become an annual event, was kicked off on Dec. 17, 2007. The following day John Green discussed the success of the project.
Essentially, the way the project works, is that nerdfighters make video's advocating a particular cause or charity, and post it to YouTube on December 17. The videos are identified as being linked with the Project for Awesome based on their similar title, theme and screenshot.
Once the videos have been posted they are promoted throughout the day, so that eventually YouTube is taken over by videos advocating charity and volunteerism.
The Project for Awesome, however, is not the only such project on YouTube. Shawn Ahmed, a former Notre Dame grad student, has a YouTube channel devoted to his work in Bangladesh. He calls his project the Uncultured Project. Shawn participated in the P4A in 2008, making a video that depicted all the work he had managed to accomplish with the help of viewers, and thanking them for being a part of his project.
