A major reason for students not turning out to vote in local elections is the belief that local elections have no impact upon their lives, according to Ginny Haas, YouVote's director of community relations.
There is also a widely spread belief that by changing the address on their drivers license to their local address that students will lose their benefits through their parents. While it is true that the address on a students voter registration card must match their drivers license address it is not true that doing so will result in a loss of insurance, said Haas in an e-mail.
There are also those students that choose to vote but then turn up at the wrong precinct because they have not double checked which jurisdiction they are registered in, according to East Lansing City Clerk Nicole Evans. She recommeded that students be sure to confirm where they are registered before going to vote.
